Groovy Gravy Sunday

Let's get something straight right off the bat. When we say gravy, we aren't referring to the brown stuff poured all over Yorkshire Puddings to make them edible (controversial point #1).

We are talking about red sauce that goes on pasta. (controversial point #2) Steph grew up in a very Italian-American family just outside Philadelphia. And every Sunday you had pasta & gravy, never marinara, never sauce. 

Why do we call it that? Well if you really want the whole story these are two great articles Lost in Translation, Sauce or Gravy?

What it boils down to though, is probably a misunderstanding between Italian immigrants and the generations below them. But in Philly, and the 'burbs around it, Italians families hold onto their confused Italian roots and call it gravy. 

So what is gravy? Basically an all day slow simmered tomato based red sauce, that uses pork to flavour it, but isn't actually a meat sauce. 

We have been wanting to do this event for sometime, as it's our favourite Sunday tradition, and the closest thing American Steph has to a Sunday Roast.

Now onto the wines!

As always, I won't give the specific wines away, but I am really excited about this line up. We will mostly be tasting through a really innovative and lovely producer from Umbria's range, along with a beautiful wine from Friuli.

Please note, this meal is not vegetarian as there is meat in the salad and pork in the gravy. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accomodate vegetarian requests for this event.
