I Need The Sun,
Domaine des Miroirs 2018

Grapes: Chardonnay

Region: Grusse, Jura, France

Year: 2018

Founded by Kenjiro Kagami – a former assistant winemaker at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – and a Japanese born engineer by trade, Domaine des Miroirs has quickly gained a reputation for producing exceptional, terroir-driven wines from Jura.

After formal wine education, he studied with some of the French greats- Thierry Allemand in Cornas, Bruno Schueller in Alsace, and Jean-François Ganevat in the Jura. It was Ganevat who found him his land in nearby Grusse, a village with the same number of residents now as in the 1700s: 185.

He has just three hectares (1.5 hectacres of Chardonnay!), releasing his first wine in 2011. All farming is organic, with no tilling, and meticulous care.

The winemaking is as natural as possible. No sulphur, wild ferments, unfiltered, and unfined. The wines produced are natural, very expressive and with huge body. They require time to settle and come into their own – a minimum of 4 to 5 years in the cellar.

He makes around 10,000 bottles a year, with 70% of the bottles staying in France or being sent home to Japan.

Here's a good article if you would like to read more about Kenjiro.

Trousseau Les Lumachelles, Domaine des Cavarodes 2021

Grapes: Trousseau

Region: Cramans, Arbois, Jura, France

Year: 2021

Etienne Thiebaud set up his domaine in 2007 after working for several years with Pascal and Evelyne Clairet of Domaine de la Tournelle. He settled just north of Arbois in Cramans, he was fortunate to acquire a few very old parcels of vines between 60 and 120 years of age. The parcels are planted with several extremely old and rare Jura varieties that are great curiosities to nurseries in the Jura and beyond. Etienne’s vineyard work has been organic since the beginning.

Just lovely. A bright, fresh and life affirming mould of Trousseau. Semi- carbonic maceration in fiberglass. Matured in old oak casks for 10 months. The nose has aromas of small red fruits. The palate is lively, fresh and mineral with slightly spicy flavours.

Indingenous yeasts, aged in French Oak, unfined and no added sulphur.

La Croix des Batailles,

Jean-François Ganevat 2019

Grapes: Gamay & Chardonnay

Region: Jura, France

Year: 2019

La Croix des Batailles is a Jura Gamay from granite soils that has been vinified in the most natural way possible. The wine certainly owes its elegance to the low yields received during the harvest as well as to aging in tuns, without pumping over or punching down. Bottled without fining, filtration or addition of sulfites, it has preserved the charms and delicacy of its fruity bouquet.
Velvety on the palate and enhanced by a beautiful freshness, it is undeniably cut to accompany gastronomic dishes.

Jean-François Ganevat embodies the 14th generation of winegrowers from this Rotalier family, in the south of the Jura. The man was cellar master at Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet before taking over the family business in 1998. The estate converted to Organic Culture the same year then to Biodynamic Culture in 2006. He practices plot selections i.e.: one soil, one grape variety = one cuvée. The result is that the estate produces 45 cuvées a year, but don't panic, everything is good, no... extraordinary. He is the benchmark for a whole generation of young winegrowers. This area is one of the major revelations of recent years among the wines of the Jura and its production, rare, is very popular with amateurs.

Pinot Noir Les Lumachelles, Domaine des Cavarodes 2021

Grapes: Pinot Noir

Region: Cramans, Arbois, Jura, France

Year: 2021

Etienne Thiebaud set up his domaine in 2007 after working for several years with Pascal and Evelyne Clairet of Domaine de la Tournelle. He settled just north of Arbois in Cramans, he was fortunate to acquire a few very old parcels of vines between 60 and 120 years of age. The parcels are planted with several extremely old and rare Jura varieties that are great curiosities to nurseries in the Jura and beyond. Etienne’s vineyard work has been organic since the beginning.

The Lumachelles plot sits in the northern sector of the Jura, just above Arbois. Brillitantly light and delicate, with a raspberry laden fruit profile. Ferment semi-carbonic, meaning this is bright, juicy, and airy.

Indingenous yeasts, aged in French Oak, unfined and no added sulphur.

Pinot Noir Petit Feule,

Bornard 2018

Grapes: Pinot Noir

Region: Arbois Pupillin, Jura, France

Year: 2018

Feule is a locality of the appellation, resting on iridescent Triassic marls, at an altitude of around 300 meters. Planted on a steep slope, the vines face west, ensuring good ripening of the grapes. They have been grown organically for many years.

This cuvée, very confidential, is one of the last proposed by Philippe Bornard, now retired, in support of his son Tony who took over the estate.

In the winery, the approach is intended to be natural, limiting the inputs and letting the native yeasts do the fermentation. The macerations are long, punctuated by pumping over and punching down and the aging takes place in old casks. Only very low doses of sulfur are tolerated at the time of bottling. Adorned with a light red color, Petit Feule reveals a nose of light red fruits, enhanced with a touch of spice. The mouth is silky, balanced by a fair acidity. A real pleasure wine.

Savagnin Ouille 24 mois, Kevin Bouillet 2020

Grapes: Savagnin

Region: Arbois, Jura, France

Year: 2020

First French AOC in 1936, Arbois is also the largest appellation in the Jura. This fertile land ("ar" and "bos" in Celtic), located north of the Jura, gives birth to red, rosé and white wines, from the five authorized grape varieties (Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot Noir, Trousseau and Poulsard). The whites are mainly made from Chardonnay. But the terroir, their particular breeding (ouilled or not, that is to say in a more or less oxidative style) and their possible assembly with the Savagnin grape variety make them truly original wines. Arbois also produces the famous yellow wine, a wine aged under veil for 6 years and 3 months, with a very particular oxidative style, which develops aromas of nuts.

Jura native Kevin Bouillet launched his own Winery in 2018. The young winemaker, in his 30s, cut his teeth with Winery de la Tournelle before creating his own operation. In 2018, he recovered some family plots that he supplemented with the vines of retiring farmers, all of which resulted in a total of 4 hectares in Pupillin, near Arbois.

This ouille style of savagnin is wild fermented, topped (ouilled, to say not allowed to come in contact with oxygen), then bottled unfiltered to give a straightforward, mineral wine, with fine stretching bitters. The length of the wine in the mouth, giving the impression that a lively river of citrus fruits, cinchona and flowers flows delicately from the Jura.

Rouge De Toute Beaute,

Ganevat NV

Grapes: 70% Gamay grapes (Fleurie and Morgon) blended with old indigenous varieties from Ganevat’s vineyards in the Jura

Region: VDF

Year: NV

One sip will chase you to the limit of a steep ledge, let you sway in the wind a bit while you savour the terroir, and then plant you firmly back on Earth with a vibrant burst. This blend is best enjoyed when cool to the touch. High-toned notes of red cherries, cranberries, crushed flowers, and pepper dominate the wine’s tart and tasty palate. Dark and spicy, bramble fruit, brooding wine with an incredibly silky substance and long finish.

Jean-François Ganevat is the former cellar master of Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet; he took over his family estate in the Jura in 1998. The vineyard, which extends over 13 hectares and includes a large number of grape varieties, is cultivated according to a biodynamic philosophy (without certification) and nature, with plot selection (the estate produces a 50th of cuvées). The vines, relatively old and coming from mass selections, are pampered, the yields are low and the vinifications are very fine. This area is one of the major revelations of recent years among the wines of the Jura and its production, rare, is very popular.

Poulsard Chalasses Vieilles Vignes

Jean Francois Ganevat 2020

Grapes: Poulsard

Region: Côtes du Jura, France

Year: 2020

This old-vine Poulsard cuvée comes from vines planted on terroir composed of grey marl soils. It was vinified for two years in large barrels (demi-muids), and bottled with out fining, filtration, nor sulphur. A light deposit occurs naturally. This is more dense than most Poulsards. A powerful drop, full of finesse and elegance. Decant this for an hour before enjoying, this is also perfect for putting in your cellar as it could age for a few years too.

Jean Francois Ganevat is one of the benchmark vignerons of the Jura region.

With the wisdom of generations of grape-growing knowledge coursing through his veins and the tutelage of his Burgundian legend mentor Jean-Marc Morey at front of mind, 'Fanfan' has taken his family Domaine to mythical status during his tenure as proprietor.

These wines are coveted the world over for their otherworldly clarity and precision. They are vivid and vibrant and made in painfully small quantities. They stand as a beacon of quality and craftsmanship in the natural wine world.

£100

Mon Rouge VDF

Jean Francois Ganevat 2019
